“Did you know, dear, how much you took away with you when you left?”
~ C. S. Lewis, A grief Observed
This past week has seen more letters come in for the Heeling Project. Every time they arrive, it is bittersweet…and I feel really privileged to read each letter in its entirety. Some are from strangers, some are from past clients…all of them very telling of a deep bond that we share with our dogs.
This is a letter to a beloved dog, Kira.
Your loyalty was complete and without question.
When life led me through valleys, you were at my side and a great source of comfort. The pain of your loss eases a bit as each day goes by but the void that was left is no less than it was 3 months ago.
That empty space is not evident to those around me, but it is fresh and continues to persist. As spring approaches, I dread the thought of the activities we enjoyed together but will be no more. Camping, hiking, Frisbee, ball, walks…
all those times we enjoyed together have come to an end forever.
Frequently I experience guilt in having to make THE decision which separated us, but I must believe that if you could have spoken, you would have told me you had a good life and it was time.
Kira
Beautiful, black
Soulful, friendship, loyalty
Words cannot describe emptiness
Beloved
Thank you my dear Baby Girl for the joy, love and companionship you brought to my life. I will forever be grateful for the time we had together.
Dad
