This past spring I sent out a casting call for dogs and cats with wheels in the Calgary area and wound up meeting this charming girl, Lucky, and her foster mom Rosalee Hughson. While my intent was to focus on some custom stock pet photos, what actually happened was a great reminder of how to live life outside of one’s ‘story.’
A few years back I came to realize just exactly what a story is, and how limiting it is to live our lives from the confines of these mental tapes. We all have them. Whether we live from them or rise above them is a different experience altogether.
Lucky was found struggling for life in a ditch in the Dominican Republic; Suffering after likely being hit by a car and left to die. Lucky was rescued by Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic and was then sent to Calgary to rehabilitate and find her forever home.
When I met Lucky, she never let me know of her pain or her struggle…what it was like to be alone in a ditch crying in agony. She didn’t go on and on about that person who hit her with the car. She didn’t reminisce about how angry or bitter she was that she could no longer use her back legs to run. She neglected to tell me how she wasn’t able to open her heart and embrace life because of what had happened to her in the past.
No. She just eagerly greeted me… and waited with excited anticipation to be placed in her wheelchair. Then she took off like a shot, ready to explore and live her life. Now.
For me, the best wisdom that dogs impart on us is to live without a story of the past. To stay present in every moment. To allow life to present itself and allow life to be embraced. Now. With no story keeping us stuck in a past that no longer exists.
Isn’t it amazing what these creatures who perpetually live in the present, can teach us about ourselves. About life. Lucky is and was a great reminder that.
Lucky is still available for permanent adoption. Please connect with the great folks at Pawsitive Match Rescue to find out more.
